Early Life and Education

Born on September 22, 1980, in Wheaton, Illinois, Sandra Kaye Smith is the daughter of South Dakota-born parents who later divorced. Raised Roman Catholic, Smith graduated from Wheaton Warrenville South High School in 1998. She then attended Louisiana State University on a academic scholarship, studying mass communication. During her college years, Smith interned at WFMB and at WVLA-TV in Baton Rouge. After earning her B.A. in 2002, she started working as a reporter at WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama.

Smith graduated from Louisiana State University in 1999 with a degree in mass communication and a minor in political science. After graduation, she worked for several small news stations before being hired by Fox News in 2007.

In October 2018, it was announced that Smith would be taking a leave of absence from her role on America’s Newsroom due to personal reasons. It is unclear when she will return to the show.

In October 2018, it was announced that Smith would be moving to America’s Newsroom full-time, co-anchoring the program with Bill Hemmer.

On March 13, 2019, Smith announced that she is expecting her second child with her husband, John Connelly. The couple have one daughter together, Maxwell, who was born in November 2017.

Smith has been with Fox News since October 2012. Prior to joining the network, she worked as a reporter for WHDH in Boston and as a bureau chief for WBBM in Chicago.
